The Market Gardener, A Successful Grower’s Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming
Written by Jean-Martin Fortier
I listened to this book as an audio offering and was sure it would be a valuable gardening reference and resource that I also purchased the paperback version to keep on my desk.
JM as he is known has provided a valuable, up to date guide to practice and efficient gardening that can be used by the small scale commercial grower or the backyard gardener.
Working to build the soil in Southern Quebec, JM covers best practices to start plants, either from seed or by transplanting them, in his area with hints on how to adopt his methods to any location.
The book provides practical strategies to farm with organic methods, using the least amount of fossil fuels and chemicals to battle insects, herbivores and weed pests.
The Market Gardener also contains sections on how to harvest, clean, store and package the various crops to assure market success.
Plant by plant guidance on spacing, rotation, fertilization and protection is provided in detail.
If you had enjoyed the methods Elliot Coleman has shared over the years, you will appreciate the updated and new ideas provided by JM in The Market Gardner.
